Kenyan sand boas (Gongylophis
colubrinus loveridgei) are beautiful, hardy and
docile snakes, I personally find them very endearing.
The first captive reproduction of this species was in
1980 at Houston zoo, and now over two decades later
they are still a highly underrated captive snake.
A male Kenyan sand boa may
only reach about 15 to 18 inches in length and about
70-100 grams in weight. The females will generally reach
about 24-36 inches, with 28 being typical, and will
weigh in anywhere from 400 to 900 + grams.
The reason we believe they
are a highly underrated captive snake is that Kenyan
sand boas are incredibly variable in colour with some
exhibiting oranges and others yellow. The amount of
colour is also incredibly variable; there are also a
number of colour mutations now being bred in captivity
including the albino, axanthic, and snow.
Kenyan sand boas are problem
free captives, we have some animals, we have had since
birth that have never turned down a meal regardless
of what type or quantity they are offered.
Kenyan sand boas are
one of the most enjoyable snakes to work with, for both
the novice and experienced herper alike.
