Reptile sand

Reptile sand is highly recommended for certain types of snakes and lizards. Many of these creatures are burrowers, meaning they instinctively bury themselves, and do so for varying reasons. In some cases, it’s to avoid the heat of the sun, in others it’s for protection from predators.

Reptile sand is specifically designed for those that keep these animals as pets. It is most often made from either synthetic silica or from natural quartz sand. Both types are widely available, although many experts recommend the natural quartz sand instead of the silica.

One of the most important aspects of reptile sand is that it be very finely ground. Lizards tend to ingest a bit of sand as a result of their eating habits, and sand particles that are too large can cause serious digestive problems.
